Refurbishment of the DFID Building
British Embassy Compound, Kampala, Uganda back to projects »

Introduction

The DFID (Department for International Development) Building within the British Embassy Compound in Kampala, Uganda, required significant refurbishment. The building, being a central hub for various diplomatic and development activities, needed upgrades to meet current standards and improve functionality.

Objectives

The primary goal was to mitigate any non-compliance issues and overhaul the building fabric and Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing (MEP) services. This refurbishment had to be executed with minimal disruption as the building remained operational throughout the construction phase.

Challenges

  • Operational Continuity: Ensuring the building remained functional for facility staff and visitors during the refurbishment process.

  • Confidentiality: Maintaining confidentiality on specific aspects of the project, given the sensitive nature of the work conducted within the site.

  • Sympathetic Refurbishment: Modernising the facility while being sympathetic to the existing structures and functions.

Approach

A phased approach was adopted, allowing different sections of the building to be refurbished while keeping the rest operational. Special attention was given to minimise disruptions to the daily activities of the facility.

Emphasis was placed on creating a design that would modernise the facility while respecting its existing architectural integrity. Sustainable and energy-efficient solutions were a priority to enhance environmental sustainability.

As mentioned the construction was carried out in phases to ensure that the embassy remained operational. Modern technologies and methods were employed to efficiently manage MEP services overhaul. Regular coordination with facility officials ensured that construction activities aligned with operations.
